father and I are to be guests at the Gandiss home," Penny explained, volunteering their names. "We were on our way to Shadow Island when we ran out of gas."

"Let's not go into all the gory details here," Jack broke in. "We're getting wet."

"You mean you are all wet," corrected Sally, grinning.

"Sally, take our guests to the cabin," Captain Barker instructed with high good humor. "I'll handle the wheel. We're late on our run now."

"How about dropping us off at the island?" Jack inquired. "If we had some gasoline--"

"We'll take care of you on the return trip," the captain promised. "No time now. We have a hundred passengers to unload at Osage."

I enjoy ALL of Mildred Wirt's stories. All are very entertaining. I was disappointed to find a large portion of "Guilt of the Brass Thieves" (chapters 10 through 21) missing. I suspect that those chapters are the best of the whole story. I would really enjoy reading the complete story.

I got suckered into reading this by the other reviews and its featured status on this website. This is not a good book. There are no plot twists or interesting turns at all. This takes place in a world where you can immediately assess someone's guilt by how they look. Thus when you meet a character who looks shady and untrustworthy, sure enough it turns out to be a brass thief. A waste of time.

Disclaimer: I am a grown-up. But I don't think kids would like it either. In fact, I read the first chapter to my 9 year old son (before I knew it was bad) and he didn't want to hear the rest. I should have listened to him. I was waiting for the plot twist that never happened.
Not my normal kind of book, but it was very engaging and enjoyable. Well written with a few surprises along the way. It's a good book for a long journey!
