asses. In fact, there is one unfortunate protégé of mine whom I have tried very hard to reform for the past four years, who is coming out of prison in a couple of days. I took up this work," he said modestly, "because I feel it is the duty of us who are in a more fortunate position, to help those who have not had a chance in the cruel competition of the world."
Tarling was not impressed.
"Do you know the person who has been robbing you?" he asked.
"I have reason to believe it is a girl whom I have summarily dismissed to-night, and whom I wish you to watch."
The detective nodded.
"This is rather a primitive business," he said with the first faint hint of a smile he had shown. "Haven't you your own shop detective who could take that job in hand? Petty larceny is hardly in my line. I understood that this was bigger work----"

Not one of Wallace's best efforts. A wealthy, unscrupulous lothario is found dead, wrapped in woman's nightgown with a bunch of daffodils on his chest. Quite an exciting and well-written mystery until the denouement, which I consider a great disappointment.

An enjoyable book the combines murder and romance into a complicated plot that keeps you guessing. This is a good book that I recommend to all who enjoy murder mysteries.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. This is the first I have read written by Edgar Wallace. I will be looking for others. Definitely recommend this one.

Above average but typical British mystery yarn with many suspects and a plot with many twists and turns.
If you like Christie and Sayers you should like Wallace as well.

A complicated plot that proves to simplicity.. The story is enjoyable, though lengthy at parts. It could be a delightful time-spender.

I may be a rather unsophisticated reader but I know what I like and I enjoyed this book. Once started, I found it difficult to put down. I has moved me to try other works by this author.
