scrolling across it. In the middle distance, Charleston airports' cracked and vitrified runways are coming into view. Missile batteries off to one side cycle their launcher-erectors impotently, magazines long since fired dry at the robot-piloted godless commie-fag euroweasel aid flights.
"We gotta bail out before we land, otherwise we'd have to go through customs," she says brightly. "That would be bad -- South Carolina never ended prohibition."
"What?" Huw shakes his head again. "Prohibition of what? What are you talking about?" His hands are shaking, he realises. "I need a drink."

Mindless dreck. Unworthy of Doctorow or any serious author.

I only made 15 pages of this one. Being Christian myself, and not appreciating bad language replacing dialogue and plot, I took it as long as I could. Don;t recommend it, myself.

What? Those other reviews are way off -- I thought this was an excellent story. Yes, one of the character swears a lot in the beginning: they're using an aggressiveness enhancing drug to pilot more effectively, and a side-effect is aggressive language. Perhaps the satirical view of the U.S. (and fundmental Christian churches) is what really put off the other readers?

what a waste of the English language - and a waste of a good author. The story just wasn't engaging, and the language is simply vile.

Unless you enjoy profanity laced tripe this book is a definite loser. It lost me about 8 pages in.

I've enjoyed all of C. Doctorow's other ebooks, but I just couldn't get into this one. For one thing, the language was just so vile, I was scared that one of my kids would see it (and I'm no prude - I had no qualms with his other books). Read ANY of his other books rather than this one.
