"The story of the orphan Pip, writing his life from his early days of childhood until adulthood and trying to be a gentleman along the way. The story can also be considered semi-autobiographical of Dickens, like much of his work, drawing on his experiences of life and people."--Wikipedia

Book Excerpt

After darkly looking at his leg and me several times, he came closer to my tombstone, took me by both arms, and tilted me back as far as he could hold me; so that his eyes looked most powerfully down into mine, and mine looked most helplessly up into his.

"Now lookee here," he said, "the question being whether you're to be let to live. You know what a file is?"

"Yes, sir."

"And you know what wittles is?"

"Yes, sir."

After each question he tilted me over a little more, so as to give me a greater sense of helplessness and danger.

"You get me a file." He tilted me again. "And you get me wittles." He tilted me again. "You bring 'em both to me." He tilted me again. "Or I'll have your heart and liver out." He tilted me again.

the best book of all times this book truly captivte your mind and then the story flows. legendary read
To all these people just saying "I hate it" and "it has no plot" grow up and post a real argument. That aside, this was a very interesting conceptual book not about a physical journey, but an emotional journey. For the immature teenagers "powerstudying" this at school who do not understand that, the book will seem boring and verbose. However someone who actually thinks and considers while reading will thoroughly enjoy seeing Pip mature and become less and less superficial as he discovers where his true loyalty should lie.
although Dickens is my fauvorite author and i do owe some deep allegiance to him for both his legacy and his morals i must admitt this book is quite hard to follow and the plot is very complicated and unfolds too much in every chapter. I had to devise a chart and family tree of the relatives, events and actions at the end to actually understand it. Well worth reading, but only for somewhat experienced and familiar Dickenarians
this is most boring book i have ever read.Oh my god ,its soooooooooooooooooooooooooo awfull,,,,,fuck it,,,,fuck charles

This book was somewhat ruined for me because I had seen the South Park episode before reading it. Nonetheless, the story itself is great, and while I must say the book is quite slow, Dickens crafts and delivers Pip's thoughts and point of view perfectly, and there is constantly that sense of guilt for all the problems of the world within him.

You guys are humiliating literature as a whole. No plot? Hard to follow? Only if you're speed reading it.
this book is the so boring. i have to read it for school and i am struggling through it because it is the worst book ever. i dont see how anyone could ever like this book.
Superb, mind blowing, classic novel. People have no knowledge of literature who says that its not good. I watched movie as well which is based on this novel(both the movies the old one and the new one as well) and its really close to my heart.
This book is text book for my english subject. Its an abridged form but I want the total information of this novel. so i downloaded it
In my view this is a plain cool story(love, humour and romance)
This is the best book i had ever read
Thank You
